Warner and SK Telecom
May 10, 2006 – 11:39 amAccording to a report in The Financial Times, Warner Music and SK Telecom have teamed up on a joint venture to sell music through mobile phones and MP3 players. Initially focusing on South Korean artists and audiences, the new venture, called WS Entertainment, will take over all businesses of Warner Music Korea, except its overseas distribution.
This comes as part of a wave of ventures involving SK Telecom and North American media companies, including their recent Helio/Myspace/Earthlink venture. As South Korea is touted by some as the proving ground for emerging mobile music business models (due to its high mobile data consumption rates and its use of the CDMA standard, also the prevailing mobile standard in China and the United States), this partnership is definitely something for the bookmarks folder.
